The Main Harmonium Notes in Sargam

The Seven Shuddha Notes

The first harmonium notes every beginner should learn are the seven Shuddha notes: Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, and Ni. These create the natural scale and form the basis of most beginner exercises.

  1. Sa - tonic or home note
  2. Re - second note
  3. Ga - third note
  4. Ma - fourth note
  5. Pa - fifth note
  6. Dha - sixth note
  7. Ni - seventh note

The Altered Notes

Alongside the seven Shuddha notes, harmonium players also use altered notes on the black keys. These include Komal Re, Komal Ga, Tivra Ma, Komal Dha, and Komal Ni.

Together, the natural and altered notes give you one full octave. They are what let different raags and songs create their own color and emotional pull.

How Beginners Should Practice Harmonium Notes

Step 1: Memorize the White Keys

Start with Sa to upper Sa on the white keys. Play them slowly in order until your hands and ears both recognize the path without looking at the chart.

Step 2: Add the Black Keys

Once the basic scale feels stable, add Komal and Tivra notes one at a time. Practice moving between a white note and its neighboring black note so the hand movement stays relaxed.

Step 3: Use Small Note Groups

Instead of jumping straight into songs, repeat short phrases like Sa Re Ga, Re Ga Ma, and Ga Ma Pa. These grouped movements build the same control you need later for songs and raag phrases.

Simple Exercises With Harmonium Notes

Ascending and Descending Scale

Ascending: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa'

Descending: Sa' Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa

This is still the most important exercise because it builds clean movement across the full octave.

Three-Note Runs

Try Sa Re Ga, then Re Ga Ma, then Ga Ma Pa. Reverse the same sets on the way down. This helps the fingers connect notes instead of treating every note as a separate jump.

One Exercise, Then One Song Line

Practice one exercise first, then test a simple melody line. That is the fastest path from raw harmonium notes into actual music.
