The Seven Shuddha (Natural) Notes

Every beginner starts with these seven web harmonium notes. They are the Shuddha (natural) notes, played on the white keys of the harmonium keyboard:

  1. Sa (Shadja) — C — the tonic and home note
  2. Re (Rishabh) — D — the second degree
  3. Ga (Gandhar) — E — the third degree
  4. Ma (Madhyam) — F — the fourth degree
  5. Pa (Pancham) — G — the perfect fifth
  6. Dha (Dhaivat) — A — the sixth degree
  7. Ni (Nishad) — B — the seventh degree

Sa and Pa are Achal Swar (fixed notes) — they never change. The remaining five notes each have an altered variant.

Komal and Tivra Notes (Black Keys)

Beyond the seven natural notes, there are five altered web harmonium notes played on the black keys:

  • Komal Re (C#) — Re lowered by one semitone
  • Komal Ga (D#) — Ga lowered by one semitone
  • Tivra Ma (F#) — Ma raised by one semitone
  • Komal Dha (G#) — Dha lowered by one semitone
  • Komal Ni (A#) — Ni lowered by one semitone

Komal means "soft" or flat; Tivra means "sharp." Together with the seven Shuddha notes, these 12 notes for web harmonium form one complete octave — the building blocks of every raga.

Beginner Exercises for Web Harmonium Notes

Exercise 1: Ascending & Descending Scale

The most fundamental exercise for learning web harmonium notes. Play each note slowly and evenly:

Ascending: Sa → Re → Ga → Ma → Pa → Dha → Ni → Sa'

Descending: Sa' → Ni → Dha → Pa → Ma → Ga → Re → Sa

Repeat this pattern until you can play it without looking at the note chart. This builds finger memory for all seven natural notes for web harmonium.

Exercise 2: Three-Note Phrases (Pakad)

Group the web harmonium notes into sets of three to develop fluency:

  • Sa Re GaRe Ga MaGa Ma Pa
  • Ma Pa DhaPa Dha NiDha Ni Sa'

Then reverse: Sa' Ni DhaNi Dha Pa — and so on. This is the same technique used to practice raga phrases and is a stepping stone toward playing web harmonium song notes.

Exercise 3: Octave Jump

Practice jumping between the lower and upper Sa to train your ear and strengthen your sense of pitch:

Sa (lower)Sa' (upper)Sa (lower)

Then try Pa to Pa', and other intervals. Use the Octave control on the web harmonium keyboard to shift registers and explore the full range.

From Practice Notes to Song Notes

Once you are comfortable with scales and three-note patterns, you are ready to learn simple web harmonium song notes. Start with well-known melodies that stay within one octave — many Bhajan and Kirtan melodies use only five or six notes.

The key is to master the basic web harmonium notes first. Song notes are simply these same notes arranged in a musical sequence. A solid foundation in scales and pakad exercises makes learning any song dramatically faster.

Web Harmonium Notes FAQ

What are the basic web harmonium notes?

The basic web harmonium notes follow the Sargam system: Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni. These seven notes correspond to the Western C, D, E, F, G, A, B. They are played on the white keys. Five additional notes (Komal Re, Komal Ga, Tivra Ma, Komal Dha, Komal Ni) are played on the black keys.

How do beginners learn notes for web harmonium?

Start by memorizing the seven Shuddha (natural) notes on the white keys: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni. Practice ascending and descending scales slowly. Once comfortable, add Komal (flat) and Tivra (sharp) notes on the black keys. Use the note chart above as a reference while practicing on the web harmonium keyboard.

What are good web harmonium song notes for practice?

Before jumping to full songs, practice basic patterns like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa (ascending scale), Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma Ga Re Sa (descending), and simple three-note phrases. These foundational exercises build finger memory and ear training that make learning actual song notes much easier.

What is the difference between Shuddha, Komal, and Tivra notes?

Shuddha notes are the natural (unaltered) notes played on the white keys. Komal notes are flattened by one semitone and played on the black keys (applies to Re, Ga, Dha, Ni). Tivra Ma is sharpened by one semitone and is also on a black key. Sa and Pa have no Komal or Tivra variants — they are fixed (Achal Swar).
