Web Harmonium Keys

Reference page for every web harmonium key. Look up the computer-key mapping for Sargam and Western notes, organized by Shuddha (white) and Vikrit (black) groups.

Understanding Web Harmonium Keys

How the Keys Are Organized

The web harmonium keys follow the same layout as a physical harmonium: 7 white keys (Shuddha Swar) and 5 black keys (Vikrit Swar) per octave, totaling 12 keys. Each key produces a specific pitch in the Sargam system.

On your computer, the web harmonium keys are split across two rows: the letter row (e, r, t, y, u, i, o, p) plays the white keys, and the number row (4, 5, 7, 8, 9) plays the black keys. This layout mirrors the physical keyboard geometry so your fingers stay in a natural position.

Shuddha vs Vikrit Keys

Shuddha (natural) — the 7 white web harmonium keys that form the basic Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa-Dha-Ni scale. Sa and Pa are fixed; they never change across raags.

Vikrit (altered) — the 5 black web harmonium keys. Four are Komal (flat): Re, Ga, Dha, Ni lowered by a semitone. One is Tivra (sharp): Ma raised by a semitone. Different raags use different combinations of these altered keys.

Shuddha (White) Web Harmonium Keys

These are the natural notes — the foundation of every raag. If you are a beginner, master these web harmonium keys first before moving to the Vikrit keys.

Vikrit (Black) Web Harmonium Keys

These altered notes give each raag its unique mood and character. Komal keys lower the pitch by one semitone; Tivra Ma raises it by one semitone.

Using This Web Harmonium Keys Reference

Computer Keyboard Lookup

Match the letter row to the Shuddha notes and the number row to the Vikrit notes. This page works best as a quick lookup when you need to confirm which computer key matches a specific Sargam or Western note.

Tip: After you verify the mapping here, switch to the web harmonium keyboard when you want live sound and full controls.

Touch Screen Reference

On phones and tablets, use this page as a note-position cheat sheet. Then tap the same note positions on the main keyboard page in landscape mode so the full octave stays easy to see.

Tip: Keep this page open while learning a new phrase, then move back to the keyboard page once the note order is clear.

MIDI Note Reference

If you practice with MIDI, this page still works as the note map. Match the harmonium note names here to the transpose setting on the keyboard page instead of treating this page as the MIDI setup screen.

Tip: Use the reference tables here when you need to confirm whether a phrase needs a Shuddha, Komal, or Tivra note.

Finger Placement on Web Harmonium Keys

Left Hand (Lower Notes)

  • Index finger: e (Sa) and 4 (Komal Re)
  • Middle finger: r (Re) and 5 (Komal Ga)
  • Ring finger: t (Ga)
  • Little finger: y (Ma) and 7 (Tivra Ma)

This covers Sa to Ma — the lower half of the Sargam scale. Practice ascending (Sa Re Ga Ma) and descending (Ma Ga Re Sa) until the web harmonium keys feel natural under your fingers.

Right Hand (Upper Notes)

  • Index finger: u (Pa) and 8 (Komal Dha)
  • Middle finger: i (Dha) and 9 (Komal Ni)
  • Ring finger: o (Ni)
  • Little finger: p (upper Sa)

This covers Pa to upper Sa. Once both hands are comfortable, practice the full ascending scale (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa') across all web harmonium keys without pausing.

Changing the Key of Web Harmonium Keys

Transpose

The Transpose control shifts every web harmonium key up or down by semitones (−11 to +11). When you set Transpose to +2, pressing e (normally Sa = C) will produce D instead. The labels on the keys update automatically.

This is useful when you need to match a singer's pitch or play along with a recording that is not in C. Common transpose settings:

  • +2 (D): Used for many ghazals, including Arz Kiya Hai
  • +5 (F): Common for female vocal range
  • +7 (G): Higher male vocal range

Octave

The Octave control moves the entire set of web harmonium keys to a higher or lower register without changing the note names. Lowering the octave gives a deeper, more resonant tone; raising it produces a brighter sound.

Combined with transpose, you can reach any pitch the harmonium is capable of. The default octave (3) matches the middle register of a standard harmonium.

Web Harmonium Keys — FAQ

What are the web harmonium keys for Shuddha notes?

The Shuddha (natural) web harmonium keys use the letter row: e for Sa, r for Re, t for Ga, y for Ma, u for Pa, i for Dha, o for Ni, and p for upper Sa. These form the basic seven-note Sargam scale.

Which web harmonium keys play Komal and Tivra notes?

The Komal (flat) and Tivra (sharp) web harmonium keys use the number row: 4 for Komal Re, 5 for Komal Ga, 7 for Tivra Ma, 8 for Komal Dha, and 9 for Komal Ni. These are the black keys essential for raags that use altered notes.

How are web harmonium keys different from piano keys?

The layout is the same — 7 white and 5 black keys per octave. The difference is in labeling: web harmonium keys show Sargam notation (Sa, Re, Ga) alongside Western notation (C, D, E). This page focuses on the mapping reference so you can match note names to key positions quickly.

Can I use web harmonium keys on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Use this page as a note-position reference, then tap the same notes on the web harmonium keyboard in landscape mode on phone or tablet.
